MY FLOWER JOURNAL

CREATE A SOFTER FALL ARRANGEMENT

Fall is here and the weather is slightly cooler…but… I am not quite ready yet for typical fall colors! To ease my way into fall, I opted to create a softer fall arrangement. I hope you love it!

The Inspiration for the Softer Fall Arrangement

We don’t get to enjoy Hydrangeas where I live because they don’t grow here with the intense summer heat. I saw some at Trader Joe’s and was immediately inspired and wanted to create a fall arrangement with it. Even a grocery store run can inspire beautiful flower designs!

Colors

  • White/cream flowers with hints of green
  • Darker green foliage
  • Golden/brown accents

The golden/brown accents add a touch of fall to this arrangement! It is the perfect color complement to the beautiful white, cream and green color scheme.

TIP: Add a warmer accent to a cool color palette as a stunning focal point.

Flowers

  • 3 stems of Hydrangeas – White
  • 1 bunch of Butterfly Ranunculus – White/Cream
  • 1 bunch of darker green foliage
  • 3 stems of Asparagus fern – from my garden (optional)
  • 3 pomegranates – These are from my garden – If you don’t have pomegranates handy, Bosc pears or any other fruit with similar coloring could work.

The flowers in this arrangement were under $15! The thrifty side of me was so happy to be able to create such a one-of-a-kind arrangement at this price! The Butterfly Ranunculus is simply gorgeous!

Vase and Supplies

  • Simple white vase – I used a planter that I had on hand for this arrangement. It didn’t have any holes in the bottom so it converted into the perfect vase!
  • Floral preservative to make the flowers last longer. Especially Hydrangeas that require extra conditioning prior to arranging.
  • Skewars for the fruit
  • Floral Scissors. I often use this one from Amazon.
  • Flower Frog. I have this one from Amazon and really like it so far!

How to Create Arrangement

I first added the three stems of Asparagus fern to the vase as it helps to keep all of the flowers in place without the use of a flower frog but if you feel more comfortable adding a flower frog will help keep all of the flowers in place especially the Hydrangeas which tend to be heavier.

Hydrangeas require some additional care and, prepping prior to arranging. Place the stems in boiling water for 30 seconds and place it in a jar of warm water. Let it sit for a few hours before arranging. This helps to prevent the stems from wilting. Here is a really helpful video showing step by step directions on what to do.

TIP: Hydrangeas require extra care before arranging to keep it from wilting. Make sure to dip the bottom of the stems in boiling water for 30 seconds before placing it in the vase.

I learned this lesson pretty quickly, as I don’t use Hydrangeas often in my arrangements and totally forgot the need for the extra care! As I started to work with the flowers I noticed it begin to wilt. By going back and adding the flowers in boiling water for a few seconds, I was able to get it to look amazing again! Removing as many leaves as possible helps too!

While the Hydrangeas are soaking in water, add the pomegranates to the skewers. Using skewers is an easy way to incorporate fruit into a vase. Fruit provides texture and additional color.

TIP: Add fruit on skewers to easily incorporate into flower arrangements.

Add some of the Butterfly Rananculous to the vase and add more greenery. Add in the pomegranates. Check the arrangement from all sides to make sure it looks great at every angle. Feel free to experiment with the placement of the flowers! You aren’t restricted in how you place the flowers.

Softer fall Centerpiece

You can create a softer fall arrangement too! Doesn’t it look lovely? The colors are so beautiful together and are a great way to start off the fall season. I used this arrangement with white pumpkins to create a pretty tablescape. See my blog post on adding white pumpkin decor which includes the tablescape.

I hope you have a good start to your fall and enjoy the cooler weather! Keep an eye out for neutral fall colors on the blog next. Please subscribe and share on Pinterest if you enjoyed this post!
