CREATE A PUMPKIN FLOWER ARRANGEMENT

It’s fun to experiment with non-traditional fall colors and create unusual centerpieces. Let’s delve into how to create a pumpkin flower arrangement that you can use as a centerpiece.

The Inspiration

I was so inspired by the beautiful flowers from Grace Rose Farm and I had to find a way to incorporate it into a fall centerpiece. Their rose farm is simply stunning!

Colors

  • Green
  • Cream
  • Pink

While these are not traditional fall colors it’s nice to experiment with different color combinations to come up with a truly unique centerpiece.

  • One dozen roses – Distant Drums
  • One dozen roses – Lichfield Angel
  • Heirloom Pumpkin

These roses from Grace Rose farm are truly spectacular! Garden roses are beautiful, fragrant, and are a joy to arrange as they look pretty and have a natural look.

  • Small glass jar that fits inside the pumpkin – I used a glass candle holder from an old three-wick candle. The best way to remove candle wax from a glass jar is to put it in the freezer for a few hours and scrape it out.
  • Flower frog and putty – I have this one from Amazon.
  • Floral scissors. I often use this one from Amazon.
  • Floral preservative for the roses
  • Garden gloves – These roses have sharp thorns and it’s best to keep your hands safe by wearing gloves when arranging flowers
  • Bowl for the pumpkin seeds/guts

How to Prepare the Pumpkin

Start by carving the top of the pumpkin. You can use a sharpie to draw the outline but I carved is freehand. Carving a pumpkin can get a bit messy so make sure to set the pumpkin on a surface that you can clean easily. Once you remove the top of the pumpkin, remove as much of the seeds and guts as possible and try to make the bottom of the pumpkin pretty flat so that the glass jar will stay straight.

Carve the Pumpkin

Make sure to save the seeds for roasting. I roasted the seeds with olive oil and salt and it tasted great.

Check if the glass container fits into the pumpkin and is secure. Try to avoid using floral foam as it’s not as environmentally friendly but if you aren’t comfortable using a flower frog, floral foam would work too.

How to Create the Pumpkin Flower Arrangement

Prepare the flowers by cutting off the bottom of the stems at an angle and placing it in water with floral preservative. Don’t remove the thorns as it shortens the vase life of the flowers. The flowers should be about double the height of the glass jar in order to look good in the pumpkin.

Leave as many of the thorns on the rose as possible to extend vase life.

I placed the glass jar on my kitchen counter instead of in the pumpkin to begin arranging the flowers. It’s easier to work with the flowers this way as there is better visibility. After you insert about half of the roses, place the glass jar back into the pumpkin.

Add the flowers to the glass jar

Keep adding flowers until the entire pumpkin is filled with roses. I didn’t use any greenery for this arrangement as the roses and the leaves are stunning.

This arrangement is made purely of roses and does not require greenery or fillers.

Look at the arrangement from all sides and adjust any flowers as needed to fill in gaps.

Complete the arrangement

This arrangement is perfect as a centerpiece for Thanksgiving or for fall entertaining. I placed it on a white table runner with eucalyptus leaves and white pumpkins and it looked amazing! You might like my post on white pumpkin decor and my post on how to create a soft fall arrangement.
